(Cleveland.com) - The window is closing on Gov. John Kasich's presidential prospects.
There's still time for Kasich to become a top-tier candidate, someone who can win the Republican nomination. But in a couple of months, that window of opportunity may slam shut.
Kasich knows that. That's why he's getting ready to run, but wisely taking just a few steps out on the tightrope without actually joining the circus.
The flirtation, however, comes with an expiration date. But instead of following the bread crumbs Kasich scatters during travels to key primary states, there's a far better way to figure out wheb1ere the governor is headed -- a way that takes all of two words to explain.
Watch Bush.
In 1999, George W. Bush put an early end to Kasich's presidential hopes by building a huge stockpile of early money and momentum.
Fast-forward to today, when Bush's younger brother, Jeb, is raking in money but building little momentum. The donor class clearly loves Bush. The Republican rank and file seem less impressed.
Peggy Noonan, a speechwriter for Ronald Reagan whose views often seem to parrot the GOP establishment, wrote in her Feb. 26 Wall Street Journal column that Bush is "making a poor impression" with the party's base.
If that soon changes and Bush shoots to the top of the polls, Kasich won't run. If Bush continues to flounder, he will.
It's that simple. Read more.
